Growth Form: Shrubs with spinose branches.

Leaves: Leaves simple and reduced to phyllodes. Leaves of seedlings compound (trifoliolate). Primary phyllodes borne on long branches with secondary phyllodes on shorter branches. In older plants replaced by green, usually spine-like phyllodes. Petiolate. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers axillary, solitary or few in clusters, sometimes aggregated into racemes or umbellate inflorescences. Flowers papilionaceous; bracteoles 2, immediately below the flower. Calyx bilabiate, yellow, persistent, upper lip 2-toothed, lower lip 3-toothed. Corolla yellow, persistent, wings distinct at apex, shorter or longer than keel, keel petals obtuse, curved upward. Stamens 10, connate into a tube. Ovary superior; ovules several.

Fruit: Pods ovoid to linear–oblong; pubescent; scarcely exserted from calyx; dehiscent. Seeds 1–6; with a collar-like rim–aril.
